A good-to-go option for short range communications
Purchased these radios for use out-of-doors in a mountainous environment in inclement weather conditions. The Uniden FRS models are not the cheapest on the market but they advertised submergibility and weren't covered in all sorts of garish, chromed-metal looking decor. The good: * Solid build quality. * They work at ranges of upwards of a mile in very mountainous terrain (no clear line of sight). * Lockout feature keeps fingers or gear from inadvertently changing channels. * Red display light preserves night vision. A very nice feature. * Battery life is excellent. Intermediate use over an 8-hour day resulted in 1/4 battery life remaining and radio-provided rechargeable batteries can be taken out and supplanted with any AAA battery. The Bad: * While they work in the mountains, they also demonstrated a lack of ability to receive comms in as little as a few hundred yards around switchbacks. That was both surprising and disappointing, especially since the "boost" button is supposed to push a signal 50 miles under ideal conditions. Lol! * Would like the volume to go lower than it does. Radio tends to receive and squawk loudly. * Setup was not the most intuitive. Manufacturers could learn a thing or two from the smartphone industry and make these things more layperson friendly. * Made in China Conclusion: Ultimately it is anticipated that these radios will be highly weatherproof since they advertise submergibility and it is hard to find waterproof FRS radios on the market, or was when we looked, so Uniden was the ticket. If you are in the market for an FRS radio, take some time, do the research, make the comparisons. There are a ton of options out there in this market.

Range.
Not tested in open field to see if the range is 50 miles. In city it seems somethimes the signal is lost. However for this amount should be fine.

Unacceptably Low Volume. Poor Clip Design
I purchased this pair of radios for K-9 Search & Rescue Training in the Rockies. The range obviously depends on both the terrain and channel. Using the 2-W frequencies, I could get a mile range with a small hill 300-400 ft elevation in between myself and the subject. That’s really all you should expect from any FRS radio. These are about and good or bad as anything else operating in the 0.5-2-W range that doesn’t require a license. There are two fatal flaws with these radios: 1). Volume is extremely low. In even a slight breeze, you have to hold the radio to your ear to hear it. I am thinking I may have a defective pair because the maximum volume is incredibly poor - to the degree these cannot be used with a chest rig. 2). The belt clip is something you would find on a pair of $15 toy walkie talkies. They don’t hold secure to backpack or molle straps. This combined with the poor audio level makes them useless for our training. I'll also note that the poor clips combined with the poor audio volume makes them extremely difficult to find WHEN they fall off of your belt or pack. On two occasions, I've had one drop from my pack and then used my dog to search for them while back-tracking my trail on a GPD. Without a dog trained to find scent articles, they would have been lost. Hopefully this review saves someone the hassle of a return or exchange or a lost radio.

whats all the hubbub bub?
I bought these in hopes that the 50 mile range would be of some truth. I did try this but unfortunately I was trying through mountains and it was an utter failure. I know that these work at around 5 miles for sure and I was just barely out of the mountains. I was in mountains that were anywhere from 2k-5k in elevation, while trying to get them to work. The range was about 5 miles while I was exiting the mountains at around 2k ft and the receiving walkie was about 1500ft in elevation with minor surrounding hills. When i get a chance to try on flat ground I will put it to the test and let you guys know of my disappointment or approval. I really hope that I can get 40+ out of them or I will be very upset. I just want some truth to what is advertised. I will be willing to pay more as long as it is the truth, right guys??

Cool to have and works great.
The first pair of the Walkie-Talkies we received, one was broken. We called and they sent us a new pair before we returned the first pair. This is a great product. Just trying to set up a private group is pretty hard for me. Other then that, its a really nice product to have in case of an emergency. Wish the Walkie-Talkies charging port was much better. The charging port i would rate 4 out of 10. Thats just me.

Uniden Walkie Talkie
Great product, but the only downfall is that they do not work 50 miles out. We bought three sets of these, planning to give them to our parents and keep one set for ourselves, for emergency purposes. My husband and son drove around trying them out and they said they lost contact about 18 miles out or so.

Good product.
These are ok. I bought them for a trip to Utah where we were going to do a few of the national parks and this was going to be our main means of communication. There were a few times where the frequency wasn’t working well despite being within a couple of miles of each other. I bought the 50 mile radius so that I wouldn’t have this issue but I did. And my buddy also had a pair of long range uniden as well so it was a bit disappointing. But despite that they worked well. Battery life was ok. Clarity was ok. And it was easy to use as well. Only reason I don’t give it 5 stars is because they aren’t the best ones I used in the past. For the price I expected more.

Sound cut out for a while. Theyre ok not great.
*Edited* Took them out of the pakage, put the batteries in, turned them on. The sound on one almost immediately cut out to near silent rendering it useless. Ive reached out to their customer support. If they can tell me how to fix it I'll edit this review accordingly. *Edit- Never heard from customer support, but left them off overnight and theyre back to normal now. Dont know what the problem was/is. Leaving it at 3 stars in case its a recurring problem. The fact that it happened at all means 5 stars is off the table and 4 stars is as high as i could go if i remember to do a 2nd edit in the future.

Gran alcance. (Modelo Uniden SX507-2CKHS)
