Not the same quality as the original...
I first purchased one of these from The Sharper Image store in Hawaii. Had the thing for several years, but then lost it somewhere. I'm not sure if it was the first (original) version of the product or not, but I do remember that it was sturdy. This version of the product is nowhere near as sturdy as my previous one. The "ball" inside is a bit loose and rattles when you shake it. Also, I'm afraid to drop this one. The first one I owned went flying a few times and never broke - this current version feels like it will crack open with the slightest impact. The price we pay for cheap goods PLUS manufacturers making things meant to breakdown and be replaced I guess. Another difference, that I'll also chalk up to build quality, is that this version practically demands you use the string to start it. The older one could be started by just running it along your leg, arm, or even just using your palm to get it spinning. I suspect that this can't get up to the speeds needed because the ball is so loose, thus the string. I suspect they saw enough reviews mentioning the string being lost, missing from the shipment, or breaking, that they now include two of them. The string works and doesn't seem like it will break easily - will outlast the spinner itself probably. Overall, it isn't bad, just not great.

Innovative
Once you get the hang of using it it works great. I’m actually starting to notice some vascularity in my forearms.

Obviously entry level, but VERY effective!
I was able to pick up this NSD Powerball for $17 here on Amazon and what a steal! It probably took me about twenty minutes to get the motion down and, to be honest, I thought I got a broken one for the first ten because I couldn't get it to do anything. The best advice I can give is not to fight the motion you feel in the gyro. It's not about just spinning your hand around as fast or as hard as you can, it's about matching and then revving up the cadence of the gyro. It's fascinating to watch it switch directions when changing hands or rotation and equally amazing watching it jump about when you've ceased moving and the gyro just spins and spins and spins. As far as the exercise goes, I can certainly feel the burn and wish that I was able to keep it going for longer without becoming sore. I got this to help strengthen my hands, wrists, and forearms, which get abused daily as a computer tech and also an avid landscaper. I can certainly see this helping, but I have to be careful not to overdo it, as it honestly is quite addicting and fun (not really a valid complaint :) My only con is cheap construction. While I don't think it's going to stop working anytime soon, mine makes a lot of squealing noises at low speeds. Once revved up, it's no longer audible and you can only hear the whir of the gyro. At the price point, it's not really something worth complaining about. Whenever this one wears out, I'm quite sure I'll go for a nicer model. Very satisfied. ::EDIT::04/17/13 About a month with the NSD Gyro and I am feeling amazing. The first three weeks were spent exercising one day and being sore for two, and again, and again. I'm happy to say that after a week or so, I began to have this warm tingling feeling spreading from fingertip to elbow while I lay in bed at night. My god, that's blood circulation! Within the last week I've been able to make it an every or every other day affair. I like to put in earbuds and either play air drums, or dance around a bit with the gyro. It really is fascinatingly fun to go with a good beat. I like to get rhythms going where I can swing the gyro around half speed on the down beat to mix things up. My highest praise goes to the fact that the exercises can be as easy or as hard as you'd like without any need to change weights. I tend to start out with a wide, slow arc holding it as a baseball, switching rotation clockwise and counterclockwise before switching hands, just to warm up. Then I speed up a tad, holding the gyro like you would the end of a jump rope: clockwise, counterclockwise, switch hands. Then I grip the gyro like I'm holding a glass of water and I tip it forward and back, forward and back (this is an amazing workout...if you can manage to switch rotation of the gyro on this one, kudos...it's hard). Then I hold it by nothing but my fingertips and again pretend that I'm holding one end of a jump roap: clockwise, counterclockwise, switch hands. This is when I go back to the original slow arcs, holding it as a baseball. Once I've loosened up a bit, I do it all over again, but usually at double speed, or close to it. Realistically, you can make this spin in almost any way you can imagine, as long as you go with the flow :) It still squeaks when slowing down, but shows no signs of wear. Very impressed.

For someone who hates exercise because it’s boring, this is like a door to the world of fitness.
I was one of the “tough customers” as far as learning technique goes. It took me 4 hours. I’m not even kidding. That thing people say about swishing a wine glass made no sense to me. I don’t know how you people swish your glasses but unless you’re balancing the base of your glass on an open palm (which is weird!) it meant nothing to me. Still, after 4 hours of YouTube tutorials, I got it! Some of the problem for me was that my hands were so weak that I was underestimating how slow and wide and gentle my turns of the ball would need to be. I won’t lie - I got it so that I could text faster, play games longer, and wear my smart watch on a tighter loop. Nerdiest reasons ever. But it works! My forearm size shrunk literally overnight and I was wearing my watch so much more comfortably. And instead of wearing out after 2-3 hours of Call of Duty or Rocket League, I was going 6-8 hours and playing better than I have in my life. I play 6-8 hours on weekends all the time, but toward the end of that I start breathing a little more, and making more conservative plays, and my fingers hit the wrong button or I hit it too fast or too slow and feel like my mind is getting bored or confused. It turns out, a lot of times MY HANDS WERE TIRED! I’m just not used to thinking of my hands as needing that much babysitting or conscious thought in taking care of them. But now that I am giving them exercise, it’s like I gained a new sense, similar to sight or smell, except this one is for hand fatigue. It’s another HP meter running in my brain of how well my hands are doing. When it gets low I use this ball for a little bit and I’m aces for another several days. As a nerdy type, I never really saw the appeal in working out, it felt like just some annoying motions that you repeat while feeling bored to tears. But this ball takes some thought to control and keeps me amused. I actually got the Diablo Evo Autostart Pro from Powerball as an upgrade to this because I liked it so much. Keeping track of the gyroscopic motion is a challenge, like a game in itself, and that makes exercise less boring to me. To people who aren’t as sheltered as I am: Yeah, I know this review comes off as “Wow, this idiot sounds like they just discovered America!” Yeah, you’re right. But there’s a lot of people like me who don’t try new things until they’re coaxed into it, and I’m glad there are products like this, which help us introduce us to new lifestyles. :)

Great product but don't lose the string
It takes some adjustment to learn how to use it but its a great workout. I lost the string so it's much much harder to get the spinner started, so make sure young on to it

Great fun and good exercise - kids LOVE it too!
This is a super little hand and wrist/forearm strengthener that is remarkably addictive! The unit works gyroscopically and once the rpm's pick up your muscles really have to work hard; a few minutes a day in each hand and I'm already noticing a difference after only a few weeks. The package doesn't come with an exercise routine but we found one online which entails changing directions and hands every 45 seconds and alternating straight arms/bent elbows. Packaging is minimal and easy to recycle- there is a small brochure and two strings that you wind around the wheel to start it spinning. We found if you quickly swipe your hand across the opening you can easily get it started which makes it much more easy to just pick up and use. If you spend hours a day at a keyboard then you should really try this out - it completely fixed my carpal tunnel syndrome! It does however seem to go missing frequently - the kids can't help picking it up and playing with it. It would probably be excellent as a "fiddle" toy for those who would benefit from such things. Highly recommended.

Lots of fun and good burn.
There's probably not a lot I can say about this that hasn't been said already. I got this a few days ago and it took me a handful of tries to get it going so I could keep the momentum up. It is a very neat gadget, there is a bit of a learning curve with it. As others have suggested I think it would be nice to have the counter on this as that makes it even more fun being able to track progress or beat records or have competitions with others. I guess I may have to spring for one of the more upgraded models. This is a great gift for anyone that is into going to the gym. It doesn't take much to get the forearms burning using this thing. Can't say much about long term durability on this thing since I just got it but it looks like it is built solidly and likely can take some impacts as it is possible to lose control of this when you get tired and the gyro is going fast. Good value for what it does.

Great Product
I hurt my wrist from a bike crash. My wrist felt sore for months and I was not sure how to strengthen it. I think this will do the trick. Easy to use for just a few minutes a day and I would say that the motion and exercise is similar to working with "battle ropes" but few people have room to use "battle ropes" at home. This technology has been around for a long time. I was glad to find this product and I think the build quality is great. Love it.
