Screw Extractor bits not effective or user not experienced

I purchased these screw extractors to remove stripped deck screws from my deck boards. I attempted to drill a hole through the center of the screws to enable the extractors to bite into the metal of the screws and help extract them. I used different size drill bits and different size extractors to try to accomplish the extraction. However, I was not able to get any of the extractors (from the smallest to the largest) to bite into the screws so I could extract them. I removed some of the damaged screws by drilling a hole far enough into the screw so that a phillips head bit was able to extract them. For the remaining damaged screws I drilled out the entire head of the screws and removed it from the other side of the board. This is the first time I attempted to use these screw extractors and maybe I don't know the technique. I would appreciate any advice from the manufacturer.

need a very small tap handle to turn.

Worked to remove broken exhaust bolt in snowblower engine

I was doing some maintenence on my snowblower and wanted to replace the old muffler. The muffler is held on with two Philips head bolts and I could not get one of them off, I ended up stripping the slots. I tried a pair of vice grips and completely ruined the head. I found this screw extractrbamd decided to try it. While waiting for it to arrive I kept spraying the bolt with pb blaster hoping it would penetrate the threads and help it loosen. I drilled a hole down into the bolt then used this extractor and the bolt finally came out.
