These are the larger granules,which are not optimal for tooth whitening

I had read that activated carbon was an efficient method for whitening teeth. I ordered this product quickly and found that it was composed of larger carbon granules; it was my error to not read the description more closely. Granules are not the optimal product for whitening teeth. The granules can work, but as you are brushing, the granules tend to move towards the back of the mouth. I would recommend using a powder based activated charcoal - read the product description carefully to find the right one. The charcoal that I purchased had an ASIN of B004DHK1KK, but it's currently not available on Amazon so I cannot link to it. It was four ounces of activated charcoal powder. I bought the product in March 2014 and I STILL have charcoal powder. Does activated charcoal work for whitening? While I did experience some results with this product, I had better results with a powdered charcoal. I feel that combining a powdered charcoal with an occasional whitening strip, combining the powder with a whitening toothpaste , or using the granules and following up with whitening toothpaste provides the best results. Using the powder exclusively has not allowed me to keep my teeth as white as I would like. Of the three combinations noted, I most often brush with the charcoal and then follow up with whitening toothpaste. I engage in this process three times a week. For powdered charcoal, do not wear anything fancy while brushing. Expect charcoal to remain in bristled. Even after using powdered charcoal at one session; the charcoal can and will drip at a subsequent session. Charcoal can leave black spots on lighter sinks. Usually, it is easy to wipe off sinks, but the charcoal is not so easy to remove from clothes.

We used this activated carbon in my child's science project for school. Her project was about various types of water filters and how well they worked, including a homemade one using this carbon as part of the filtering device. That particular filter didn't do so well, but it was made out of rocks, sand, activated charcoal and coffee filters so I didn't really expect it to filter out bacteria very well. From: http://science.howstuffworks.com/environmental/energy/question209.htm: "Activated charcoal is good at trapping other carbon-based impurities ("organic" chemicals), as well as things like chlorine. Many other chemicals are not attracted to carbon at all -- sodium, nitrates, etc. -- so they pass right through. This means that an activated charcoal filter will remove certain impurities while ignoring others. It also means that, once all of the bonding sites are filled, an activated charcoal filter stops working. At that point you must replace the filter."

Great for removing odors

I had been struggling for weeks to remove heavy cigarette smell from a used laptop I bought. I tried fans, sunlight, crumpled newspaper, lemon juice, baking soda, vinegar, isopropyl alcohol, you name it - nothing worked at all. I finally bought 2 jars of this and completely covered the disassembled laptop inside a plastic bin. After 4 days the smell was completely gone. I used an air can to blow away any lingering pieces. Highly recommended for removing odors!

Best I've tried regarding price and quality .

I screen bagged about 2 handfuls for my 55 gallon tank and this stuff started working fast. Overnight (7 +hours) i had clear water. In 2 days it was crystal clear. Ive used others good and bad but for the price and quality of Marinelands carbon I think I'll stick with them. As for how long it works my advice is to use a little at a time for up to 7 days max and take it out and use when again when you notice a little cloudiness vs putting more and letting it sit in your tank for a month+ as some others recommend. Especially for beginners, it will prevent you from forgetting about it and a whole bunch of stuff leaching back out from a larger amount of carbon than just a little bit. I've also found it to be more efficient and affective.

Too impure, too much iron in the crystals

It was inexpensive, and easy to use. The problem is that leaves nasty orange rust stains on filter, enclosure, and housing unit. It does not hurt any thing important. It just leaves the non-removable stains.

Easy to use but putting it into a media bag can be a drag

If you filter requires you to put this carbon into a media bag, I recommend one with a zipper. I initially used a drawstring media bag, and the charcoal slowly came out of the bag little by little. I did not have this problem when I switched to a zippered media bag. Also, rinse well before using. I did not think to rinse this product before using it, which resulted in black water. It cleared up after a few minutes. That being said, this is quality carbon and it does a fantastic job at keeping my water clear.

Great buy

I’ll have more than enough to make my tank clean you really don’t have to use much, it took less than an hour for my 5 gallon to clear up and I only used like half a teaspoon in a grate bag. Great buy!

Like the Savings for Pioneer Pet Water Filter

After reading reviews, I decided to give this a try to replace the charcoal in the filters for my cats' Pioneer Pet water fountain. It works well. I gently pull apart the filter, and then clean the filter including the fiber pieces first. Then put about 2 teaspoons of this charcoal in and reassemble. The only reason for 4 stars instead of 5 is that there is a fair amount of charcoal dust that I don't get with the OEM filter. But the cost is nothing by comparison!

Rust contamination

Do not buy this stuff. It is full of some sort of ferrous contamination that causes rust stains on the bag and in the filter.

Amazing deodorizer

Used to deodorize a fridge. Just a little bit on a plate removed any smell within about 24 hours. Wonderful product.

Exactly what I wanted for my aquarium

Nice little carbon pebbles. It doesn't look like a lot when you get it but once you pour it out of the container it a lot more than expected! Works well in my aquarium!
