Works Even Better Than I'd Hoped

Every time I want to grill I have to make up foil packets with smoker pellets inside. Even though I punch holes in the packet, I never get the results I'd like. I saw this Lodge Cast Iron Smoker and decided to take a chance. I've used it two nights in a row and it works spectacularly! It gets hotter than the foil packet could and it generates a steady and robust supply of flavorful smoke. I don't know how it would work with wood chips, but I'm sold on this for my use.

Use in my Weber gas grill to smoke back ribs put cast iron pan on top of fire grate, use wood chips . Fill up pan all the way with chips when’s dinner!!

NOT a cooking skillet

When I was looking to purchase this for my grill I wanted to know if this could double as a cooking skillet. Pictures on Amazon and on the lodge website never showed the inside or the bottom good enough to make a determination. Reviews on Amazon were mixed with some saying "yes" and some saying "no". I couldn't get a straight answer so I took a chance. I wanted the item for adding wood chips of my choice for flavor on the grill, I like lodge products, so it wasn't a huge deal breaker if it couldn't double as a cooking skillet. SO, I'm here to tell everyone that this CANNOT double as a cooking skillet. If you're looking at this because you think you can cook eggs, bacon, and other food in here look elsewhere. There are holes in the lid AND holes in the bottom. This is for smoking wood chips in a grill and nothing more. I just wanted to make it clear since apparently some reviewers think you can cook in a skillet with holes in the bottom.

A fine Lodge Product

While this is in the familiar shape of a Lodge skillet, it is not. Both top and bottom have teardrop holes for smoker chips. I found the holes a little large. I got this for a propane smoker that does not have a chip tray or anything. Unfortunately, this Lodge chip pan doesn't quite fit for My application. Also, due to the propane flame, it burned off nearly all the seasoning to the cast iron. While surely this would work well in other applications, such as on a BBQ grill to add smoke, I will continue to look for a more appropriate chip tray for my Great Outdoors Smokey Mountain smoker. I will also keep this cast iron because it is quality and I can easily reseason and reuse.

Consider it a portable smoker

Instead of firing up the smoker for a small amount of meat, using this on the Weber gas grill gives the same results without much effort.

Don't expect a Traeger

This is a basic light smoking device. it's nice, but It won't turn your grill into a traeger.

Decent

I wish it didn’t have holes in the bottom. My wood chips catch fire right away when I place this on coals. Should be closed on the bottom to prevent that issue, and open on top to allow smoking.

Don't purchase this if you seriously love smoked meat

I use a Charcoal BBQ and I used to soak different types of wood in water and then place them on the coals to smoke. This generated a great deal of smoke flavor for the meat. This smoker does not work. The holes in the bottom of the pan allow water to instantly drain out and the wood chips just burn up with very little smoke. It is a nice cast iron ornament but useless as a smoker and way too small.

Disappointed

I am disappointed with the quality control on this product. There are uneven pieces around the rim and patches of uncoated iron which is rusty. Although I can return the pan I've got the inconvenience of finding a printer and then taking it to a UPS shop. Plus I now have to wait to get another one.
