Great Buy for the Money
First, this same nailer was $100 more at retail stores. Second, worked fantastic. I installed my new underlayment and shingles (35 squares) in 3 days all by myself. Never jammed up one time.

Pretty reliable and easy to use
Great product overall. Sometimes it jams by getting two nails stuck in the firing lane, but it’s always easy to clear. I wish it had a flat bottom so you could place it on a surface without it falling over. I also don’t understand why it has pointy parts coming out the sides where they will hit the surface it rests on. They are small enough to actually damage roofing materials if you’re not careful.

So far so good
It's early days for me. I've only run about 1 case of nails (7,000 nails) through it, but it's awesome so far. I love it. The gun did jam one time, and when it did, it was a real doosey to get it un-jammed. But, I'm pretty sure I know *why* it jammed. My guys aren't real careful with the nail spools before putting them in the gun, sometimes storing them in their pockets, and I'm willing to bet the little copper wires holding the nails together were a bit bent, causing two of the nails to be too close to one another, and at the wrong angle to one another. The gun managed to get two nails at once into the firing chute, and really blasted them into one another. I had to knock the breach (the magazine -- also how you load this gun) with a hammer to get it open. But, the safety mechanism worked perfectly, and once it jammed, it wouldn't fire again until I got it cleared out. Once I managed to get the breach open, I just pried out the old nails with a screwdriver, pushed the piston back up, and there was no sign of any damage on the hardened steel mechanism. It worked flawlessly after that. I'm not super thrilled with the "black" trigger design (as opposed to the "gray" trigger). It DOES work the way a roofing nailer is supposed to work (depress the trigger first, then fire on bump), but sometimes I try to use the gun in a more precise way (like when I'm installing drip-edge), and position the nail accurately by depressing the safety first, THEN pulling the trigger. Good luck with that! Very often I end up double, or even triple firing. The trigger is just not made to be multipurpose. It's made for bump fire, not single fire. It'd be nice if it did both -- but that would probably be a way more complex (and expensive) design! I would buy this gun again if I needed another roofing nailer. In fact, I did! Now I've got two of them, and they both work great.

Great - But Could Have Been Excellent - Not Site Ready
You can tell from all the other rave reviews that this gun is top-notch, so I'll only comment on why I did not give it full 5 stars (Not Site Ready)... 1. Does not come with the air hose connector. If you're a professional you have a bunch of these in your tool bag; if you're a DIY'er doing your first roof or switching to a new gun you might not. There is no real excuse for not providing the connector. 2. Does not come with even a sample amount of lubricant. Unless you have other tools that require the same lubricant you probably don't have this in your toolbag, and they recommend a couple drops at least once a day (depending on use of course). 3. No case? Good grief. I know this thing is made of tough parts, but all air tools need a case not only for protection but so you can keep all of the extras together with the tool (e.g., lubricant, users guide, etc.). And it needs a box to it can go on the shelf in the garage nice and neat. 4. Description says the RN46-1 has two modes - contact and sequential. NO - the RN46-1 is contact only; the RN46-2 is sequential. Other reviews have pointed this out, but the description has not been updated. I've seen this same wrong product description on multiple sites so it came from the manufacturer that way. All of my Cable Porter air tools have a simple trigger switch to "convert" between the two - the Bostitch is one or the other forever. Since I generally do small jobs (not a professional) I usually go conservative with sequential mode to avoid accidents (have not shot myself yet :-). That said, this gun really moves through shingles fast so I'm good with it - just have to be careful about pulling that trigger unintentionally. (oh, and I did not buy the CP nailer for this job because it had more reviews about "jamming" which is unacceptable - I have not had any jamming issues with my other CP nailers, though). 5. (this is just a comment) - the gun I received is orange, not yellow. The pictures show a DeWalt yellow gun, but the one I received is definitely orange. Does not effect performance ;-) In fact, it makes it easier to find this tool among all my DeWalt drills and such. The CP air tools are all bland black and metal which can make them difficult to find at a glance.

Works well once broken in
We initially had some problems with this, a combination of double fires and jams. However, it smoothed out after the first coil and some additional air tool oil. It ran flawlessly after that.

Awesome gun
Don’t get fed up during the first couple bundles. Bought this to replace my older hitachi that has seen better days. Got it on the roof and for maybe the first 6 bundles it was a jam-o-matic and I was going to return it for a new hitachi. I oiled it before I started and a few times during the first 6 bundles. Then all of a sudden I realized it wasn’t jamming anymore working flawless. Must have needed a break in period. Every time I ran out of nails it let me know by not firing which is a really nice feature and the 1 piece door is awesome. A1 roofing gun in my books

Sequential operation
There is no selection for sequential or contact mode of operation. The equipment detail does not clearly state the limitation on the mode of operation, Model # RN46-1 only operated in contact mode it caused multiple firing due to bumping action. Model # RN46-2 operates only in sequential mode.

Quality build and Value for money
The pros: I purchased this gun after reading many, many forum reviews. It really came down to Hitachi, or this Bostitch for me. Funnily though, I never read any of the amazon feedback until I was about to purchase it, by which time it only confirmed what I already knew about the gun. The gun is well balanced in the hand, and comfortable to hold. It is also very light weight and does not feel cumbersome at all in use, not that I have used it a whole lot yet. For me at least it bounce trips and cycles perfectly, sinking 1 1/4" galv nails into 2 by lumber effortlessly and without excessive recoil. The side loading mechanism is amazingly easy to use and once you figure out how to load it, will be pretty quick to load coils of nails on the job. I will point out though that your nail coils need to be properly stacked coils, not squares, triangles or any other shape and should be neatly wrapped without tangles. If your nails are squished out of shape you will not be able to load them properly, if at all, in the magazine and they will likely not feed properly causing jams. This is true of most guns however and should not be viewed as a negative, it's just a heads up for anyone new to coil guns. The cons: The gun is not shipped with any 1/4" male air coupling. Something Bostitch has in common with Paslode and others, so don't expect to use this as soon as you open the box. You will need to fit your own air coupling before you can use it. I would recommend a 360 degree swivel type. The gun is capable of both sequential and contact tripping, however, only the contact trip trigger is supplied. This is possibly not a big deal if that's how you plan on using it anyway, however, I can envisage times when I may want the sequential firing for precision. If you were to use this gun for siding, for example, you will definitely want the gun in sequential mode. Another niggle about the gun is that it is not supplied with a small starter bottle of oil. I know it's not a big deal, most folks buying this gun, myself included, already have multiple guns and oil already and are aware of the need to lubricate a pneumatic gun properly during use and storage, however, for someone buying this as their first gun, they should be aware that along with an air coupling, they will also need to buy some oil before getting started with it. Lastly, the gun does not ship in a protective case, which for professional use is not really an issue as it will likely never be stored in it, however the weekend warrior may want a molded case for storage between uses. None of my niggles, and that's really all they are, is a deal breaker or reason not to choose this gun. In terms of ease of use, build quality and value for money, I really think you can't go wrong with this gun. The gun is a sturdy professional tool and will stand the test of time on any jobsite. It will also be equally at home for the weekend warrior. If not for the lack of oil and air coupling, I would have given this gun 5 stars.

amazing
i don't know what "thickness" refers to, but let me say that this gun is a life saver. shingled 1000sq in one (long) day. couldn't be happier. if you can afford to buy a roof's worth of shingles, take the extra step and buy this nailer. wish i had bought one years go.

Basically the ak47 of roofing nailers
At its normal price it's 4 stars, but if you can get on sale its 5 stars. Own 3 of these guns and Bought 2 of them at $215 and 230$. Great buys at that price. My biggest gripe with these is that need don't offer replacement parts. Tips, rubber anti sliders and better quality adjustment depth knob. Not to mention the seal kits are crazy expensive for what they are. Also the reloading tray needs to open much wider. Super awkward placing coils in there. If you put cheap coils through it they will jam once in a while but I find with oiling lots, keeping certain parts clean and good quality coil nails it hardly ever jams. I can fire these guns faster than any other gun I've used and I love them for that reason.
