Used this to skim the ceiling
I wanted a soft blanket for the natural light to come across this room. We skimmed the ceiling, down to the trim and this made it really easy to rid those areas of texture. I bought the 12” one and found it extremely easy to maneuver and handle.

Works great for skimcoating drywall - just don't make the mistake I made
When I got this, I didn't realize that the flexible rubber "blade" had a hard plastic protector on it. Heck, I've never used a magic trowel so I didn't know what to expect - and the picture shows a blue blade, and the protector is blue. So I skim coated my first wall with the hard plastic protector in place. Needless to say, it was a disaster. Then I realized my mistake and was amazed at how easy it was to use. The walls turned out great.

Beware the 1 star and 2 star reviews.... Most don't seem to know what they are doing. I used this to skim coat an entire 32x15 foot living room in a couple of hours and it worked great. There is almost no way to get a perfectly glass smooth surface the first time around without practice. The steps to getting a really good finish: 1) Joint compound thinned to the consistency of mayonnaise. You want it thinned to the point that its barely holding it's shape on the knife but not going to roll right off the wall. 2) I apply the compound with a 10" or 12" knife just trying a good coverage on the wall. I leave about a foot from the bottom of the wall completely bare. 3) After a quick even out with knife I take a cheap roller w/pole and roll down from ceiling to floor with a good amount of pressure. This serves to scrape away the excess compound and give you a pretty nice even layer to trowel. The excess compound fills in the last foot that I left bare and prevents me from having to scoop a lot of compound from the bottom of the wall. 4) Now using the trowel I start at the top left of the wall and lightly pull it down from ceiling to floor. I work my way from left to right ever so slightly overlapping the previous run. Always, always, always dip the entire trowel in a 5 bucket of water and rinse the edge after every couple of strokes. If ANYTHING accumulates on the edge you end up with wavy results. I actually rinse and clean the excess after ever stroke and thoroughly clean the edge. having a moist trowel edge helps immensely. 5) Wait until it dries.... move to other walls... 6) After drying there ARE going to be slight waves in some places. I knock down the obvious, rare high spots with a knife. and then go right to my next really, really thin application of compound. I don't even bother sanding. When dragging the trowel from ceiling to floor your wavy lines will run vertically... so I simply take a 12" knife with a small amount of compound along the entire edge and lightly scrape/pull from top to bottom on the previous layer. This fills in any waviness really well. This step literally should take maybe 2 minutes for a 8'x12' wall and should dry really fast as you're only adding just enough compound to fill in the tiny waves. 7) At this point I'm lightly sanding the entire wall and it's almost a mirror finish. I use a light to inspect for defects and I usually have to do one application just in a few spots where there are issues.

Helpful product yielding decent results
I have a house with crappy walls. Crappy walls that have been wallpapered extensively and aggressively. My prior attempts at skim coating left such an uneven surface that I ended up texturing the walls, which, though a short term solution, doesn't resolve the long term issue. I could demo the walls, but as I confirmed with my most recent project, my taping skills are sub par at best. Funny thing is, I am not bad with a mud knife. But to do a wall well, I think you need an even broader blade. I appreciate that there are people who are good with a traditional trowel, but the Magic Trowel really does make it easier for the rest of us. The thing really is just a big mud knife. If there is magic, it is in the texture of the edge, which makes it easy to feather, resulting in less obvious transitions and a flatter surface. I didn't have much luck with rolling on the mud - I suspect that the roller covers I had were too smooth. Maybe someone else can comment on whether a rough cover gets more mud on the wall. What I ended up doing was mix the mud to about a pudding consistency and using a 5 inch blade to get it on the wall rather approximately, then using the Magic trowel to lay it down and even it out. This was clearly messier. It took me about 2 hours to do a small bathroom. But the results were good after 2 coats. There were faint blade marks that were very easy to sand down, and the ones I missed were really quite hidden by the primer anyway. They were that small. The result was very satisfactory. For 25 dollars, this was money well spent. Please make sure that your mud is even in consistency and free of debris, and that you wipe the blade pretty frequently. The reason I am taking off a star is cuz there aren't any instructions at all. There are a couple of sparse YouTube videos. I would strongly encourage you read the review, "Pro tips for Magic Trowel skim-coating and knockdown texture" by Amazon Customer. Very helpful.

I was a bit sceptical but I thought I give it a go on a ceiling I had just boarded. Used a roller to apply skim then smoothed over with this trowel, ended up doing two coats .. I've read some reviews which claimed the you can get a good result but not perfect and some sanding may be required .... I consider myself pretty handy when it comes to DIY and I managed to get a perfect finish !!!

Top banana
This is indeed a magic trowel. I had a terrible wall with plaster holes after removing woodchip. Couldn't find my trowel to put P.filla plaster repair on so used hands! This trowel made my wall smooth enough to paper or with a second coat, paint. Top banana.

Great product, poor quality.
This is a great product as it makes skimming very easy for an amateur. However after one single bedroom and half a double bedroom it has started splitting which causes annoying lines to form in the skim.
